The Fall of Volenta Popofsky

The Fall of Volenta Popofsky

Characters:

  • Shabasta: Porcupine Bard; a dramatic performer who uses “biting satire” and prickly wit.
  • Aera shan Ravanór: Wood-elf Rogue; a deadly archer who utilizes “Uncanny Dodge” and a “turbo bow”.
  • Olfin Darning: Hexblood Paladin; a steadfast protector wielding the Holy Symbol of Ravenkind.
  • Malron Lichtstrahl: Reborn Cleric; a spirit medium for Lathander who channels “Radiance of the Dawn”.
  • Crusty: High Elf Sage Wizard; a scholarly intellect focused on arcane mastery and strategic casting.

Summary:

The party found themselves in a perilous situation within a flooded dungeon chamber, wading through three feet of cold water. Volenta Popofsky, one of the vampire brides of Strahd, confronted the group from a balcony before dropping an amphora of oil into the water and descending to fight. Olfin Darning began the encounter trapped inside an Iron Maiden, but Aera shan Ravanór successfully picked the lock, allowing the Paladin to burst free and activate his holy aura. Note: [The session opened with a recap of the previous “YOLO run” involving a yellow spoon and a presentation of a “slide deck” summary created by Malron to help everyone remember the plan.]

The battle was a grueling display of magic and steel. Volenta attacked with poisoned daggers and alchemical shards that exploded into ice, briefly trapping Crusty in place. Malron Lichtstrahl’s divine radiance burned the vampire and her zombie minions, while Shabasta and Aera provided consistent pressure with spells and silvered arrows. Despite Volenta shifting into a monstrous, winged form and igniting the oil on the water’s surface, the party’s coordination held firm. Note: [Meta-discussions during the fight ranged from the mechanics of Uncanny Dodge and Haste to a lengthy humorous tangent regarding the “Ant-Man vs. Thanos” theory and the benefits of hiring a good CPA for tax season.]

In the climax of the struggle, Volenta grappled Shabasta and dragged him ten feet up the dungeon wall, threatening to drain his life. However, the party delivered a series of devastating blows that finally pinned the bride to the wall, effectively “crucifying” her and ending her reign of terror. With the threat neutralized, the party recovered a key to free the werewolf Emil Terescu and stripped the bride of her valuable treasures. Note: [Following the combat, the players discussed the strategy of using Revivify as a “free heal,” noting that it is often mechanically better to let a character die and bring them back at zero rather than healing them from negative health.]

Key Locations:

The Flooded Dungeon: A dark chamber filled with three feet of water. It features a ten-foot-high balcony and a velvet curtain leading deeper into the castle.

Encounters:

Combat – Volenta Popofsky: A high-stakes battle against a vampire bride and several zombies. Key actions included Aera’s lock-picking, Malron’s radiant divinity, and the eventual pinning of Volenta to the wall.

Loot:

Plot Points:

  • The party has eliminated one of the primary wives of Strahd, reducing his immediate support.
  • The group is now faced with the choice of proceeding through the velvet curtain on the balcony or backtracking to explore other areas.

Session Highlights:

  • The “Ant-Man Thanos theory” as explained by the party during a lull in combat.
  • The group’s relief upon realizing that Malron’s Radiance of the Dawn spell only harms undead, sparing the party in the cramped corridor.
