The Slipper and the Shadow of the Bat

The Slipper and the Shadow of the Bat

Characters:

  • Aera shan Ravanór: Wood-elf Rogue. A deadly archer and the party’s lead scout, expert in trap detection and lockpicking.
  • Olfin Darning: Hexblood Paladin. A resilient protector who walks the line between light and shadow, wielding divine power.
  • Malron Lichtstrahl: Reborn Cleric of Lathander. A spirit medium who does not need to breathe or eat, serving as the party’s spiritual anchor.
  • Crusty: High Elf Sage Wizard. An intellectual scholar accompanied by a tawny owl familiar, wielding potent arcane evocations.

Summary:

The session began in the aftermath of a brutal confrontation in the catacombs with Rahadin. While the party had successfully wounded the chamberlain and forced him to retreat, they were left battered; Malron was nearly dead, and Olfin had barely escaped a permanent end. Retreating into the safety of a Tiny Hut, the heroes took a much-needed short rest to bind their wounds and prepare for their final objective within Castle Ravenloft: the rescue of the innocent Gertruda. Note: [The group discussed sourdough discard snacks and classic literature like “The Outsiders” while the DM tracked hit dice and short rest mechanics.]

Following the discovery of a discarded slipper on the stairs, the party ascended into the “Rooms of Weeping”. In the King’s Bedchamber, Aera’s keen eyes and lockpicking skills granted them entry into a room of preserved luxury. Above a blazing hearth hung a striking portrait of Tatyana, whose uncanny resemblance to Ireena Kolyana gave the party pause. The portrait depicted her wearing a silver bracelet of the moon and stars—the very same heirloom Olfin had previously recovered for the Vistani girl, Arabelle. Note: [Players debated the significance of the bracelet and the lore of Strahd’s brother, Sergei.]

Pushing further into the bedchamber, they found Gertruda sleeping fitfully beneath silk curtains. Though initially fearful and under the fog of a vampire’s charm, she was snapped back to reality when Olfin cast Protection from Evil and Good upon her. Gertruda revealed she had been a “guest” since her disappearance from Barovia village, kept in isolation and tormented by the threats of Strahd’s brides. Note: [The DM and players verified the specific mechanics of the “Charm” effect and the DC 17 Wisdom save required to break it.]

The rescue was interrupted by the dramatic entrance of Anastrasia, one of Strahd’s brides. Flanked by two wights, she telekinetically slammed the doors shut, demanding the party surrender Gertruda. The parley was short-lived, and a chaotic battle erupted within the bedchamber. Olfin acted as the frontline tank, while Crusty and Aera rained fire and arrows from the wings. The combat took a gruesome turn when Anastrasia sloughed off her skin to reveal her “vampiric abomination” form—a giant, bloated bat-creature. In a moment of desperation, Anastrasia crit Olfin with a savage bite, draining his life force and killing the Paladin instantly. Note: [The table discussed the “Two-Part” nature of the session and the lethality of the “Phase 2” transformation.]

Driven by vengeance and the need to survive, Malron unleashed a flurry of Scorching Rays, piercing the monstrosity and burning it from the inside out until it collapsed into ash. With the immediate threat extinguished, Malron immediately utilized a scroll of Revivify, fueled by amber teeth provided by Aera, to pull Olfin’s soul back from the brink. Battered but triumphant, the party now prepares to use a teleportation stone to escape the castle with their rescued companion and their gathered artifacts.

Key Locations:

The Catacombs (K21/K83): The site of the previous battle with Rahadin. The party successfully avoided thirty skeletons by choosing not to explore every tomb.

The Rooms of Weeping (Map 5): A desolate and atmospheric section of the castle containing the King’s Bedchamber.

King’s Bedchamber (K56): A lavishly furnished room with a blazing fireplace, an extensive library of military strategy, and the portrait of Tatyana.

Encounters:

The Rescue of Gertruda (Social/Investigation): Aera picked the lock to the bedchamber, and the party successfully convinced Gertruda of their intent to save her. Olfin utilized divine magic to break Strahd’s charm.

Ambush at the Bedchamber (Combat): The party faced Anastrasia (Vampire Bride) and two wights.

  • Outcome: Both wights were destroyed. Anastrasia was slain after transforming into a bat-abomination. Olfin Darning was killed in combat but subsequently revivified.

Loot:

None this session. (The party spent amber teeth worth 300gp as components for the Revivify spell).

Notable NPCs:

Gertruda: The daughter of Mary from Barovia village. She was naive but courageous, having been lured to the castle by Strahd under the guise of reparations for her village.

Anastrasia: A vampire bride of Strahd. She was sophisticated and mocking until driven to her monstrous bat form. She was killed by Malron’s Scorching Ray.

Rahadin: (Mentioned) Strahd’s chamberlain who fled the previous encounter.

Plot Points:

  • The Face of Tatyana: The party confirmed the extreme likeness between Ireena and the historical Tatyana, explaining Strahd’s obsession.
  • The Silver Bracelet: The confirmation that Tatyana’s bracelet in the portrait is the same one recovered in the village.
  • The Brides’ Fate: Two of the three brides (including Volenta and now Anastrasia) have been dealt with.

Session Highlights:

  • The Chair Master: “She’s better with the chairs than she was with the sword,” remarked the party after Anastrasia telekinetically battered Olfin with a piece of furniture.
  • Divine Intervention: Malron’s quick use of the Revivify scroll saved the party from a permanent loss.
  • The “Riz” Factor: “He’s got Riz,” the players joked about the Paladin’s high persuasion roll to convince Gertruda to follow them.
