Shadow Over the Precipice: The Infiltration of Castle Ravenloft

Characters:

  • Aera shan Ravanór: Wood-elf Rogue (Level 7). A ghost amidst the flame and shadow, she utilizes her mastery of Evasion and a specialized meat cleaver to neutralize threats. Her pseudodragon companion, Zora, serves as her eyes in the dark.
  • Malron Lichtstrahl: Reborn Cleric of Lathander and Spirit Medium. Clad in heavy plate, he serves as the party’s anchor to the light, bridging the gap between the living and the restless elven spirits of the valley.
  • Shabasta: Bard of Fate (Level 7). A weaver of destiny who manipulates time with Silvery Barbs and bypasses physical barriers via Dimension Door.
  • Krusty (Ralph Kristofferson): Wizard (Level 7). The party’s arcane architect, commanding transformative utility through Fly, Invisibility, and Polymorph.

Summary:

As the sun surrendered to the jagged peaks of the Balinoks, the party stood at a critical crossroads. The transition from the relative sanctuary of the Bluewater Inn to the vertical reaches of the Count’s domain represented a fundamental strategic pivot. This mission was predicated on a rare “strategic window“—the departure of the Master of the House—demanding a shift from open-world investigation to proactive, surgical sabotage.

The journey commenced with an 8.5-mile trek from Vallaki. Near the Sarepool crossroads, the party encountered a Vistani wagon helmed by the elder Stanimere. The exchange was one of cautious neutrality. Recognizing the party’s historical merit—specifically their role in laying Verushka’s spirit to rest—Stanimere bestowed a Clairvoyance Stone to aid their infiltration.

Note: [The party briefly debated a “Trojan Bunny” strategy or theft of the Vistani crest before opting for diplomatic neutrality.]

Upon reaching the precipice, the party observed Strahd von Zarovich departing the castle atop his nightmare, Becephalus. With the Master away, Krusty cast Fly and Invisibility on Aera, who soared across the 1,000-foot drop to the parapets. Aera used oil flasks to lubricate the ancient mechanisms and successfully pickpocketed the alarm horns from two patrolling wights. However, the infiltration nearly turned catastrophic when Aera attempted a “Running Somersault Dropkick”; she stumbled (rolling a 1), losing her invisibility as she collided with the guard. Combat erupted, but the party’s coordinated fire prevented the sentries from retaliating. Aera successfully lowered the drawbridge, allowing the party to reach the servant’s entrance.

Note: [The DM returned a Luck Point to Aera following the failed somersault, noting the sentries were “low-level annoyances” compared to the threats deeper within.]

Key Locations:

The Bluewater Inn: The party’s primary base of operations and the last bastion of relative safety in Vallaki.

Sarepool: The Vistani encampment and site of the crossroads encounter.

The Chasm and Drawbridge: A 1,000-foot plummet and 50-foot gap that serves as Ravenloft’s primary geographical defense.

The Servant’s Entrance (K1-K2): A discrete entry point accessed via the password “Ikame Dastra’s memory.” Contains a registration book for “next of kin.”

Encounters:

Social: Stanimere: A neutral negotiation resulting in the acquisition of the Clairvoyance Stone.

Tactical Combat: The Parapet Wights: A high-efficiency engagement initiated by Aera’s failed acrobatic strike. The strategy of pickpocketing the horns first prevented a castle-wide alarm.

Loot:

  • Clairvoyance Stone: A palm-sized stone with 3 charges to cast the Clairvoyance spell.
  • Silvered Crossbow and 20 Silvered Bolts: Transferred from Malron to Shabasta to improve the party’s ranged options.

Notable NPCs:

Stanimere: A Vistani Elder and messenger of Madam Eva. He remains friendly due to the party’s past deeds.

Strahd von Zarovich: Briefly sighted departing the castle; his absence is the linchpin of this session’s tactical window.

Plot Points:

  • The Three-Pointed Star: A crest intended for Lady Fiona Wachter. Its design suggests a connection to the ancient Fanes of Barovia.
  • The Servant’s Register: A grim ledger in K1 where staff “register for next of kin.” The presence of a fresh corpse suggests the “registration” is a literal death warrant.

Session Highlights:

  • “Fly, you fools!” — Krusty, channeling ancient wizardly wisdom while granting his allies the power of flight.
  • The “Trojan Bunny” Strategy: A discarded plan involving sneaking into the castle within a gift or carriage.
  • “The cows have teeth” — A cryptic, chilling observation regarding the predatory nature of Barovia’s inhabitants.
  • The Acrobatics Somersault Fail: Aera’s attempt to drop-kick an undead sentry that resulted in a mid-air fumble.
