The Boon, the Bride, and the Beating Heart
The Boon, the Bride, and the Beating Heart
Characters:
- Aera shan Ravanór: A cunning Wood-elf Rogue adept at stealth and navigating complex situations.
- Gumbo: A pragmatic Half-Orc Rogue with a knack for stealth and unexpected solutions.
- Malron Lichtstrahl: A Reborn Cleric of Lathander with a connection to spirits and the undead.
- Zorpheus: Mysterious wanderer and bard drawn to fate and prophecy.
- Olfin Darning: A Hexblood Paladin navigating the balance of light and shadow through their oath.
Summary:
The party continues their uneasy stay at Castle Ravenloft. After suspecting that Aera may have been bitten by Strahd, the vampire lord cryptically remarks:
“The cows have teeth after all.”
He then grants the party a boon: resistance to necrotic damage for 36 hours (two long rests). Moments later, he reveals that none of them were marked—he was merely toying with them.
Strahd begins a grand tour of the castle, during which Malron notices **pulleys and a mannequin dressed like Strahd**—a theatrical scare tactic designed to intimidate intruders.
Meanwhile, Sasha pulls Zorpheus aside, asking:
“Do you intend to steal from Castle Ravenloft?”
She pleads for the party to rescue Gertruda, who is being held in the Keep. Gertruda was once Doru’s fiancée, and Ismark had sent her out to recover after she was lost on the road to Vallaki.
Sasha shares her tragic past—her husband died, and she longs to see Strahd fall and the morning light return. She informs the party of a rear servants’ entrance they can use when Strahd is away, though she cannot unlock it herself.
“I come in Dostron’s memory.” — Sasha reveals this as Strahd’s oldest password, known only to Rahadin.
Later, Escher escorts Zorpheus upstairs, rejoining the rest of the party. Rahadin enters with a chained prisoner, his head covered by a sack.
“The prisoner waits your judgment, my lord.”
Gumbo is handed a sword and tasked with delivering punishment, though the nature of the crime and the prisoner’s identity remain unclear.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning strikes the south gate tower, disabling the bridge and requiring repairs. The party returns to the grand entry for tea while Strahd investigates the damage.
Diabola informs them:
“The lightning struck a room upstairs. The bridge is disabled and repairs will take until morning.”
The party is offered guest quarters, with assurances that no servant will lay hands on them if they remain in their rooms. Sasha guides them up three floors to a tower guest room with a single bed.
Rahadin warns:
“Do not leave your chambers until morning. Dark fiends roam the castle at night.”
Escher is assigned to guard the door, and the room is locked with a key Rahadin holds.
Inside, Gumbo searches a clock and finds a map indicating that the beating heart of the castle lies in the north tower.
The party attempts to stay awake, but all are mysteriously forced into unconsciousness. When they awaken, **something has changed**…
