A doll for Arabelle

she's been taken!

Session Recap

In the shadow-haunted realm of Barovia, our intrepid band of adventurers embarked on a quest that would unravel mysteries both ancient and treacherous. Here’s a recounting of their recent exploits:

The Town of Vallaki

  1. The Stockades: A curious sight indeed—a row of stocks where each person is adorned with crude donkey heads. Vallaki’s eccentricities never fail to surprise.
  2. Proclamations and Festivals: The town buzzed with anticipation. First, the Wolf’s Head Jamboree, and now, the Festival of the Blazing Sun—both events promising intrigue and danger.

Blinsky’s Toy Store

  1. The Enigmatic Doll: Within the cluttered shelves of Blinsky’s shop, our eyes fell upon a doll eerily reminiscent of Irena. A connection to her fate, perhaps?
  2. The Clockwork Man: Blinsky whispered of a clockwork creation within Castle Ravenloft—an enigma that piqued our curiosity.

The Vistani Encampment

  1. Shivasta the Great: A porcupine-like bard, Shivasta regaled us with tales and secrets. His lute carried melodies of forgotten lore.
  2. Commotion and Desperation: Broken pottery, whips cracking—the encampment seethed with tension. Alexi’s plea for his missing daughter, Arabelle, echoed through the canvas walls.
  3. Yann’s Fate: Accusations flew. Yann, drugged Alexi and was accused of kidnapping Arabelle, met a grisly end. His severed head lay toward the Luna River.
  4. The Mysterious Signet Ring: Kasimir clutched a sigil-bearing ring—a key to unraveling deeper truths. Necromancy and evocation intertwined in its design.
  5. Riches: Alexi offered us 500 gold pieces if we succeed in recovering Arabelle alive.

The Dusk Elves

  1. Centuries of Solitude: Kasimir revealed the Dusk Elves’ ancient presence—five centuries of silent vigilance.
  2. Rahadin’s Betrayal: The traitor Rahadin had compromised their safety. The Vistani shielded the Dusk Elves from Strahd’s wrath.
  3. Frostbitten Secrets: An elf bore frostbite scars, a testament to perilous journeys. What secrets did their blistered skin hide?

A story from Kasimir:

Even now, nearly five centuries past, the memories are sharp and clear in my mind, like shards of broken glass. I was a mere century old when my people lost their freedom—when the tyranny of the von Zarovich clan rose like a shadow across the land.

It was not Strahd that shattered the peace, but his father, King Barov von Zarovich II. In those days, our people dwelled in Othrondil, the Forest of Twilight. A council of princes ruled us, led by Erevan Löwenhart, my uncle and a master in the art of bladesong. When King Barov’s eyes fell upon our lands, he demanded our fealty—our tribute to the borders of old Zarovia, the kingdom his ancestors once ruled. Erevan, who practiced the style of the lion and bore the lion’s sigil, was never one to bow, however, and refused. His act of defiance ignited the fires of war.
Barov’s conquest was swift and brutal. His forces, joined by Rahadin, my cousin, and a traitor to our people, laid waste to our kingdom. I was a mage and scribe in Erevan’s court—I saw Rahadin shatter Erevan’s blade and execute his family, marking the end of the royal line. My people were subjugated; those that resisted were hunted like rabbits.

Barov ruled over us with an iron fist—and when he died and his son, Strahd, came to power, we rose in rebellion, leading the charge for freedom. But Strahd was even more cunning and cruel than his sire. He quashed our revolt in a matter of days, and slaughtered our people in a genocide that left less than a hundred alive. He left us, the survivors, to the mercies of the Vistani, who took us into their caravans and led us to sanctuary in this valley.

Strahd’s hunger for conquest, however, was endless. Within a year, the last of his enemies had fallen, and he had claimed the valley for his own, naming it “Barovia.” We found ourselves trapped, imprisoned in the heart of our conqueror’s new empire. By then, however, we had built a home here, and chose to remain—hoping, in our heart of hearts, that the Vistani’s kindness would keep us safe. And so here we have remained ever since.

The Footprints

  1. A Deadly Encounter: Footprints told a grim tale. Yann fought, fell, and died. The second fled, while the third waded into the river, burdened by something heavy.
  2. The Ring’s Clues: Was Yann the first victim? The signet ring’s cryptic symbols held answers we sought.

The Baron’s Library

  1. Deception and Intrigue: We infiltrated the manor in hopes of finding the library, claiming an appointment. Our true purpose? Unraveling the ring’s mystery.

And so, dear reader, our adventurers sit in the waiting room, surrounded by dusty tomes and whispered secrets. The path ahead winds through darkness, but courage and curiosity light their way.
